AirCard provides a streamlined workflow for customizing how your passes and cards appear in Apple Wallet on your iPhone. In this AirCard tutorial, we explain how to navigate the AirCard interface, prepare suitable graphic skins and artwork PNGs, apply your designs to compatible cards, and manage the device synchronization process safely.

How AirCard Works Behind the Scenes

AirCard does not modify iOS system firmware or require a jailbreak. Instead, it utilizes the native macOS Apple Mobile Device protocol over USB to communicate with the iOS pass management service. When you select a card within the AirCard desktop interface and assign new artwork, AirCard replaces the cached graphical assets of that pass bundle on the device and triggers a lightweight synchronization request.

Step 1: Launch AirCard and Connect Your Device

Launch AirCard from your Applications folder. Ensure your iPhone is connected via USB, unlocked, and that trust has been granted. AirCard will query your device and display a list of detected Apple Wallet passes. You will see cards organized by their registered identifier, such as transit cards, store loyalty cards, event tickets, and payment passes.

Step 2: Preparing Card Artwork & Skins (Dimensions & Format)

To avoid visual distortion or flashing errors, preparing your card skins according to Apple Wallet pass specifications is essential. Here are the recommended guidelines:

  • File Format: Standard PNG (Portable Network Graphics) with RGB color profile. Avoid CMYK color spaces as iOS image decoders may reject them.
  • Aspect Ratio: Standard card ratio is approximately 1.586 : 1 (similar to standard credit card dimensions 85.60 mm × 53.98 mm).
  • Recommended Resolution: 1125 × 708 pixels or 750 × 472 pixels for high-density Retina displays (@3x and @2x).
  • File Size: Keep image file size under 1.5 MB to prevent synchronization timeouts and memory buffer overflow during pass transfer.
  • Corners: Do not manually pre-round the corners of your artwork. Apple Wallet automatically applies hardware-accelerated rounded corners and border masks.

Step 3: Selecting and Assigning Artwork in AirCard

In the AirCard interface, click on the card pass you wish to modify. Drag and drop your prepared PNG image into the artwork preview area, or click the file picker button to select your image. AirCard will generate a real-time preview showing how your card will appear in the Apple Wallet stack.

Step 4: Flashing the Artwork to iPhone

Once you are satisfied with the preview, click the "Apply" or "Flash" button. Keep your iPhone unlocked and connected during this process. AirCard will establish a session with the iOS AirTraffic / MobileDevice sync service. A progress indicator will display the upload status. Do not disconnect the cable until AirCard displays a confirmation message indicating that synchronization is complete.

Step 5: Inspecting Your Updated Card in Apple Wallet

Open the Apple Wallet app on your iPhone. Locate the card you updated. You should immediately see the custom artwork rendered on your pass. If the previous artwork still appears, close the Wallet app from the iOS multitasking app switcher (swipe up and hold, then swipe the app away) and reopen it to force a cache reload.

Crucial Boundaries: Payment Cards vs PassKit Passes

It is important to understand the technical boundary between standard PassKit passes (loyalty cards, transit cards, boarding passes) and Secure Element payment cards (Apple Card, Apple Cash, American Express, Visa, Mastercard). Payment cards are governed by Apple Pay security protocols. In many iOS versions, custom payment card artwork may be overwritten during issuer tokenization updates or may not sync to paired Apple Watches due to cryptographic asset signing.
